Help create change for All Future Generations: Project Compassion 2025
$ 40.00

Irene was born into poverty in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and thought her life would never change. With little education, two children to care for, no partner and no opportunities for change, every day was a struggle to survive.

“My mother decided to send us to school despite our limited means. We still lived a tough life, but she managed to get us into school,” Irene shared.

But tragically, school was not the safe haven her mother had hoped.

“It was at school that one of my classmates sexually assaulted me,” Irene shared. Irene became pregnant.

Forced to leave school, Irene became a mother while still a child herself. Without an education, Irene could not get a job and look after herself or her young family.

Caritas Kongolo, in partnership with Caritas Australia, offered vocational training to young women in her community, survivors of violence, orphans, and others persevering through hardship.

Irene chose to become a seamstress, recognising its potential to provide financial stability.

Spanning across the six weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australian schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world.
