Tasmanian Devils face extinction in the wild due to a devastating contagious cancer called Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). This disease is easily and rapidly spread through scratching and biting, which is part of their natural behaviour when eating and once contracted Devil’s will normally die a painful death within six months.

At Taronga, we are working hard to help save this iconic Australian species by breeding an insurance population of healthy, cancer-free devils. To do this, we need to match up genetically diverse devils that will make the best pair, and the strongest offspring. Like a dating service!
